A Project Gutenberg "To-do" List

(An unofficial site in support of Project Gutenberg and Distributed Proofreaders.)

A lot of books were written before the 1923 copyright deadline.  Not too many are well known

today and some are more important than others.  While I want to encourage folks to contribute

to Project Gutenberg any way they can, I thought it might be useful to have a place for those who

are looking for ideas on which books to add.

The list includes almost 2100 entries compiled from the catalogues of Everyman's Library, Franklin

Press' "100 Greatest Books", the Modern Library, Oxford Classics, and Penguin, as well as

Bloom's Canon --  Harold Bloom's The Western Canon, is one (knowledgeable and opinionated)

man's view of the important literary books of western culture (from which I have extracted those (about 680)

written through 1900 (more or less); an approximate cut-off date which is 'safe' for copyright purposes).

PWBS - This list includes the 294 books from Publisher's Weekly's list of US Best Sellers from 1900-1923; and.

Some other nominated works.

Other established 'canonical' lists will be added as they are available.

You can also check Curtis Weyant's list of about 400 important American novels and other books at  http://caw.homelinux.net.

Of the almost 2100 total entries, almost 1200 are already in Project Gutenberg, PG Australia or are "In Progress".

About 266 still seem to be under US copyright (listed as "UC" (sometimes with date)).

About 287 do not appear to have any etext version and are also separately listed in the "Not Found" list.

About 345 are available from etext sources other than Gutenberg.

This represents an increase of about 100 new or in progress Project Gutenberg etexts and a reduction of more than 80 in the "Not Found"

List since December, 2003.

Please Note that a source sometimes refers to a compilation, such as “Essays” or “Collected Works”.  Where a fair number of

those items have been turned into etexts, I have indicated the location, but often there are (many) pieces

missing. Similarly, the source may cite some individual essays, articles or poems which may be part of larger

collections that have been done already. Please be careful, more research is probably warranted if you want

to work in these areas. I have also taken some liberties in combining collections; e.g., Penguin's "Poems of _____"

may differ from Everyman's "Collected Poetry of  ______".

Etexts available in a language other than English are indicated by a prefatory abbreviation (e.g., Fr., Sp., Gr., It., Sw.).

Consolidated List            Texts "Not Found"

This list has been checked against

1) the Digital Book Index,

2) the King Kong New General Catalog of  Books and Authors

to show what etexts are freely available to the public (whether Project Gutenberg compliant or not), and

3) David Price’s PG In-Progress list (if actively in progress in 2002 or 2003).

The lists were checked in June, 2004.

Some folks may prefer to focus on works which are not available at all, others may wish to 'upgrade' works

found elsewhere to Project Gutenberg standards for the PG sites.

This list was originally created in June, 2002 and I plan to update it regularly.  If you have any corrections, updates, or

references to other 'canonical' lists, please send them to me.

thx,

Steve Harris
